Kindergarten
New Fairfield Bright Beginnings is proud to offer New Fairfield’s first certified and accredited full-day kindergarten program. The program allows children to remain in the security of a familiar learning environment, while advancing to new and exciting levels of growth and development.
When children come to kindergarten, we see many different stages of readiness. They are all young children, but they are not the same in chronological age, maturity, physical characteristics, attitudes and aptitudes.
Kindergarten children
- Want to be perceived as quite grown-up, yet can revert to childlike behavior
- Are direct and to the point, yet they are not always sure of the difference between fantasy and reality
- Laugh and love humor
- Are searching constantly by touching, handling, watching, listening, assessing and feeding their ever-growing powers of conceptualization

Curriculum
Reading Readiness
Most kindergarteners are not ready to read when they enter school in September. Two important steps must be developed before children will learn to read: processing information and pre-reading skills. New Fairfield Bright Beginnings utilizes a reading textbook based on age-appropriate literature.
Objectives:
- Name and identify each letter of the alphabet
- Understand that written words are composed of letters that represent sounds
- Know the difference between individual letters and printed words
- Know the difference between capital and lower case letters
- Understand that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters
- Learn to apply letter-sound correspondences to begin to read
- Know that print moves left-to-right across the page and top-to-bottom
Language Arts
We focus on four basic areas: oral skills, listening skills, literature and handwriting.
Objectives:
- Write his/her name and other important words
- Write each letter of the alphabet, both capital and lowercase
- Dictate messages such as news and stories for others to write
- Learn the vocabulary of school such as numbers, shapes, colors, directions and categories
- Distinguish fiction from nonfiction, including fact and fantasy
Mathematics
The math program is based on a textbook that focuses on manipulative and hands-on learning to illustrate math concepts at a level the students can understand.
Objectives:
- Classify, compare, and group objectives by attributes
- Construct, identify, and use numerals
- Add and subtract up to the number 10
- Describe and identify shapes
- Understand sets, concept of one-half, and lengths
- Recognize and evaluate money
Social Studies and Science
The science and social studies activities are often incorporated into the Reading Readiness program.

Art

- Know
- Learn about arts and crafts of today’s culture
- Value
- Participate in school and community activities related to art, community and the world
- Grow
- Develop a sense of self-confidence, maturation and direction; develop physical coordination and motor skills; provide opportunities to work together cooperatively, and develop a sense of responsibility and respect for materials, works of others and the environment.
